You have to do that after downloading the Steam Link version you want, though, or you'll block access to manually download it too (from the Pi itself only). To prevent it from auto-updating I modified the /etc/hosts file to block access to the server they use, by adding this line at the end: Steam Link supposedly has a command line flag to prevent it from auto-updating, but it is not working (it may have been removed a while ago). This next link has the steps to manually install any version of Steam Link (you have to change the file names in the instructions to whatever version you are going to install): The version I am currently using, which is working, is 1.1.86.210. I think I tried with both 1.1.87 versions and I still got the black screen, so it is likely that the issue was added on version 1.1.87.216. This link has useful information about existing Steam Link versions: Ĭurrent version seems to be 1.1.89.225. So my impression is that they did something in several of the latest releases that broke how it works at least in some cases for the Pi 4. Once I did this, things went back to normal and it has been working since. ![]() You have to manually download and install an earlier version, and then block the Pi's access to that same server so it doesn't automatically update itself again once you start Steamlink. ![]() In the end, I had to downgrade to an earlier version of Steamlink (I can look up which version worked for me), which wasn't terribly easy. ![]() ![]() I could hear background sound from the Steam PC menu (though you may have that disabled by default), but other than that just a black screen. But last month, after Steamlink automatically updated itself, it started behaving like you describe: menu ok, black screen once it connects to the PC. I have been using Steamlink on a Pi 4 successfully for a couple of years now (on the Buster version of Raspberry OS, Bullseye has its own issues right now with Steamlink).
